On Purpose with Philip Kisaka: Data Privacy & Purpose

On Purpose” is Ikigai Nairobi’s member spotlight series where we learn about the journey of finding one’s reason for being. For this edition, we share more about the members participating in our member-led event series – Lunch & Learn. We’re excited to share more about Philip Kisaka, the Chief Privacy Officer at DPO 360 Africa, who led our Lunch & Learn session in August.

Meet Philip Kisaka

                               Philip Kisaka

Philip is the Chief Privacy Officer at DPO 360 Africa, Africa’s premier data privacy hub that offers tailored privacy solutions to enhance data privacy across the continent. His work sits at the intersection of law, technology, and human rights. Philip believe that privacy is more than a legal requirement; it is a human right and workplace culture issue.

Where It Began

Philip’s interest in data privacy began while working at a digital marketing agency while he was in university. When the UK and EU passed stricter data protection laws, he saw firsthand how the data protection regulation could and would transform entire industries.

That one experience sparked his curiosity and set him on a path to specialize in privacy, a field he admits he never expected to end up in.

He describes his journey as one of “pivoting with intention”. Unlike traditional legal practice paths, data privacy is an emerging need in the market. This appealed to Philip as he says one needs to stay aware of emerging trends and adapt to new opportunities. This approach and agility had allowed him to be innovative and impactful in a fast-changing digital world.

Philip’s Motivation

‘Passion is what gives mission meaning”

He deeply cares about empowering individuals and organizations navigate the complexities of privacy in a way that makes sense for their day-to-day operations. This purpose-driven mindset makes his work more than just a profession, it’s a calling.

What’s Next?

Leaning more into building a product-led organization shifting from purely services to solutions that can scale and serve proactively.’

Over the next five years, Philip’s vision is to expand into European markets, taking African-built privacy tech solutions and insights global.

What do you enjoy about your experience at Ikigai?

‘On your own, it would take years and lots of coffee to build a network like this.’

Philip enjoys the richness of the community at Ikigai as one of the most rewarding aspects of this membership. The diversity and quality of the people and organizations noting ‘it’s a community that accelerates meaningful connections’.

How do you unwind and find balance?

Music. Always music.

When he is not working, you might catch Philip at a piano class. For him, music is a way to find calm, reset, and create balance.
