Opportunity To Thrive: Africa’s Business Heroes Competition

A philanthropic initiative by the Jack Ma Foundation, Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) is a competition that aims to identify and award 10 exceptional entrepreneurs from across the continent. Set to take place for 10 years, the competition intends to support 100 entrepreneurs to develop sustainable business models that increase employment and economic opportunities.

Resulting from Jack Ma’s trip in 2017, ABH aims to address the entry barriers obstructing African entrepreneurs from actualizing and scaling their businesses. Launched in 2019, the competition aims to identify and support African entrepreneurs making a difference in their communities by supporting entrepreneurs financially and with the skillset to scale their businesses.

Currently, in its fourth year, the ABH competition is accepting applications from entrepreneurs from all 54 countries. Open to entrepreneurs from across the continent, across sectors, ages, and gender; eligible entrepreneurs will:

  • Be of African origin
  • Have a formally registered business for 3 years or longer

Ten finalists will be selected to compete in the ABH finale pitch competition and a TV Show broadcast across the continent. Additionally, they will compete for the US $1.5 million grant, access to industry experts, investors, accelerators, and training sessions.

Previous successful applicants include Chebet Lesan of BrightGreen Renewable Energy, Eric Muli of LipaLater, Navalayo Osembo-Ombati of Enda, and Tonee Ndungu of Kytabu.

How to apply:

To take part in the upcoming round of ABH, you need to share a

  • Written application
  • Film and upload 2 one-minute videos on yourself and your company, and a customer testimonial
  • A reference letter from a mentor, friend, teammate, or partner
